Chiefs got a 2010 fifth-round draft pick by trading DT Tyler to Panthers

One day before Oct. 20 deadline for the NFL trade, the Carolina Panthers made a in-time decision to boost their defensive line: send a 2010 fifth-round draft pick to the Kansas City Chiefs for defensive tackle Tank Tyler.

It’s a homecoming for the 6-foot-2, 306-pound Tyler, who grew up in Fayetteville, N.C., and played at North Carolina State. After being taken by the Chiefs in the third round of the 2007 draft, Tyler started all 16 games last season wearing Chiefs jersey. However he lost his starting job to Ron Edwards and has had only 22 tackles by so far. But to the Panthers, he will be a good choice to replace Maake Kemoeatu, who suffered a season-ending injury in training camp.

General Manager Marty Hurney said Monday that he was confident Tyler will fit in well with the team. Hurney scouted Tyler in the preseason and considered that the young defensive tackle had good size and athletic ability.
