Rams gave rookie WR Gilyard contract instead of Bradford

The St. Louis Rams generously gave rookie wide receiver Mardy Gilyard a four-year contract worth $2.34 million on Monday, and on the same day they signed seven other 2010 NFL draft picks, excluding the first overall pick, Sam Bradford. The move caused a lot of guesses on what’s going on between the Rams and the prominent rookie.

But let’s first turn back to Gilyard’s new contract. By signing the contract, Gilyard received $552,000 as signing bonus and he will earn a base salary of $320,000 in his first season with the Rams. His salary for next season will be $405,000, for third season $490,000 and for fourth season $575,000. The first pick of the fourth round, 99th overall pick has a height of 6 feet and weighs 187 pounds. During his college football career, he had always been a dangerous downfield fields threat and earned a title of All-American wide receiver with 87 caught passes for 1,191 yards and 11 touchdowns in last season only. His total number for the three seasons with the Bearcats includes 25 touchdowns and 168 receptions along with 3,000 career receiving yards.

Comparing to what Gilyard received from the Rams, first overall draft pick Bradford is still waiting for his contract although he was previously expected to help the Rams improve offense. The former college star quarterback was recently seen in a #8 Archie Manning jersey, but he did not make any comment on his current contractual status.
